A&M-SA marches on MLK day

Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson joined students for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day March on Monday, January 19. Marchers followed the nearly 3-mile route from Martin Luther King Jr. Academy to Pittman-Sullivan Park. A&M-SA faculty, staff and students joined nearly 200,000 people to honor Dr. King's life and legacy.

On Friday, January 23, University faculty met with Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson in a Faculty Forum, where they had the opportunity to discuss the future of the University and educational plans.

"I was delighted to have had the opportunity to address the faculty and learn more about their perspective about our campus," said Dr. Matson.


University professors receive national recognition

Photo of Dr. DorelDr. Theresa Dorel, assistant professor of special education, has been selected by the national Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) to receive the Susan Phillips Gorin Award, which honors CEC professional members who demonstrate exemplary personal and professional qualities and make outstanding contributions to the CEC and to children with exceptionalities. Along with her teaching duties, Theresa is the president of the Texas Council for Learning Disabilities (CLD) and faculty advisor for the student chapters of the CEC and the CLD. She will be awarded at the CEC convention in April.

photo of Dr. KimDr. Young Rae Kim, assistant professor of mathematics education, is one of only 32 early career mathematics educators selected nationwide for the 2015 Cohort of the Mathematics Education "Service, Teaching and Research" (STaR) Program. As a STaR fellow, Dr. Kim will attend a 5-day summer institute and a "regroup" meeting held in conjunction with the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) Annual Conference in January of next year. The STaR program also provides access to academic year networking with early mathematics educators across the country.

Student organizations welcome potential new members

The Office of Student Activities and Campus Activity Board hosted a Student Org. Rush for the spring 2015 semester this week, inviting A&M-SA students to get information about and join the available student organizations. A&M-SA has three categories of organizations, University Sponsored, Recognized Groups, and Special Interest Groups, and a current total of 33 different organizations, giving students a wide variety of groups to choose from.
